The History of La Société Saint-Pierre

Founded in 1947, La Société Saint-Pierre is, for the Acadians of the Chéticamp region, the body “par excellence” that works to preserve and promote the Acadian language and culture. The Society thus watches over and protects the intellectual, social and economic well-being of the Acadians of our region.
Proud proprietor of Les Trois Pignons, La Société Saint-Pierre, through its museum, its hooked rug gallery and genealogy centre, stands as the protector of our history and our ancestry.

During its first twenty years, the main focus of La Société Saint-Pierre was to provide financial aid to students in the form of loans and bursaries. Although its main focus during those years was on education, La Société Saint-Pierre never lost sights of its other objectives: to preserve the Acadian heritage, to promote the intellectual, cultural, social and economic interests o the Acadians in Cape Breton.

In 1968, La Société Saint-Pierre was placed in abeyance following the founding of the “Fédération acadienne de la Nouvelle-Écosse”. In 1974, the disappearance of La Société Saint-Pierre was opposed and new directors were elected. Begun in 1976 with a subsidy from the Cape Breton Development Corporation, Les Trois Pignons opened its doors in 1978.

Today La Société Saint-Pierre continues its work to preserve the local history and language, to collect genealogical information and to help find solutions to local social and economic problems.
